Soundproofing Your Wall With American Mass Loaded Vinyl

You will have to look long and hard to find a soundproofing material superior to American mass loaded vinyl for soundproofing your wall. American mass loaded vinyl, or MLV, is high quality vinyl sheeting embedded with both silica and barium salts to give it weight. American loaded mass vinyl works as well as lead sheeting when it comes to deadening noise, but is non-toxic.

You will stretch your roll of American loaded mass vinyl across the studs of the wall you are soundproofing, having each section overlap the previous one by at least ". You’ll then either nail or staple the MLV to the studs, and use a good acoustical caulk to seal both its seams and its perimeter. When the MLV has been securely sealed against gaps, you will used PVC seam sealing tape to further protect the seams and perimeter, making your soundproofing membrane will be as tight as possible.

When you’re satisfied that your MLV membrane is as soundproof as you can make it, you can install a layer of 5/8′ fire code-compliant drywall, which you’ll also tape, mud, and paint. This method of soundproofing your wall is the way to go if you are constructing a new home.

Soundproofing Your Wall If You Live In An Apartments Or Condo
What if, however, you live in an apartment or condo and want to try soundproofing a wall which is shared by two units, and the apartment or condo manager will not let you remover the existing drywall to add soundproofing material to the studs? You can still successfully soundproof the wall using a sound-damping material known as Green Glue.

A highly elastic and viscous damping compound, Green Glue is applied to drywall using a large caulking gun, and most home construction experts recommend that you allow at least two twenty-nine ounce tubes of Green Glue for each of your four-by-eight panels of drywall (three would be even better!). You can apply the Green Glue by placing a section of drywall face-down on your sawhorses and using the caulking gun to cover its back with the Green Glue.

When you’ve finished applying the Green Glue, you can simply position the new drywall over the original wall and screw it into place, and repeat the process of applying Green Glue to your drywall sections until you have completely covered both your existing walls and your ceiling.

Either of these ways of soundproof foam your wall will be appropriate for both commercial and in-home recording studios, and also for home music practice rooms or home theaters.
