Roofing iron is a popular choice for many Australian homes, but in the past, condensation even in insulated roofs has cause rust. And the fact that they are also noisy when it rains bothers some people. Traditionally, insulation for iron roofs took the form of glass wool on top of the ceiling, or foil placed under the iron. In both cases, condensation was still a problem.
Now there is a new product that combines both glass wool and foil in the one product. This is a glass wool blanket with foil laminated to one side of it and it is placed right under the iron and on top of the battens. This means that the insulating properties of the glass wool are right against the iron, sealing in enough warmth so that condensation is completely eliminated. Care must be taken to overlap the blanket seams so that there are no gaps where condensation may enter.
The best part about it is that it does not cost anymore than traditional insulations. The downside is that it can only be installed by a tradesman and in new buildings, renovations or complete re-roofing jobs. The product also insulates against noise, so if the noise of heavy rain or hail drives you mad, this is the insulation to get.
