Numerous Applications of Soundproof Material

Your walls may not be as tough as you think. Alone they aren’t enough to keep you insulated from the weather, sound, and pests. A barrier between walls is necessary to keep heat and sound in the house, and cold, dampness and pests out. Most homes are already fitted with some sort of insulation, but not all of them are created equal.

Many homes, especially older ones, are outfitted with fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass is made of lightweight, wiry pink fibers that are compressed together into sheets. Although inexpensive and to a small degree effective at climate control, fiberglass offers minimal protection and saves little energy.

It also can be harmful to your health. Touching fiberglass can make the skin itchy and sore, while inhaling one of the sharp fibers can cause serious health issues. They can become caught in the throat, creating scars that can potentially cause further problems.

To create the strongest barriers between your walls and the outside world, consider the benefits of spray foam insulation as an alternative to traditional fiberglass. Spray foam is liquid polyurethane which solidifies into a spongy material once it hits the wall.

Since it is applied in liquid form, it is able to penetrate the entire surface being treated, filling in the tiniest of cracks. The fewer gaps there are between the insulation and the walls, the stronger the protection against outside elements.

The thick barrier created by spray foam makes it nearly impossible for small pests and insects to burrow into your home. Whereas fiberglass is easily chewed, torn, or simply displaced over time, spray foam insulation sticks permanently to the area.

Its uneven texture and strength make it a formidable obstacle for any pest that would dare attempt to break through it. Water and mold will also be discouraged from seeping in and causing damage. Spray foam is a safe alternative to other materials with benefits that include mold prevention.

Spray foam insulation can also be used to better soundproof the walls. The thick surface dampens loud noise. It also can be sprayed in a variety of places, including ceilings and floors. No more will you have to suffer loud noise from your basement or teen’s bedroom.

In addition to pest control and soundproofing, it is a green material. It saves far more energy than fiberglass, keeping more heat in during cool months and more hot air out during summers.

It is also created using renewable and recyclable resources, which helps to contribute back to the economy as well as the environment. And while initially it may seem expensive, spray foam insulation will increase the value of your home and save you plenty on electric bills, saving you more money in the long run. Your home is your fortress, so if you want to protect it, you have to start with the foundation first. Investing in spray foam insulation will make your house less vulnerable to the elements (as well as your noisy neighbors). And you won’t have to worry about potential health risks. It’s soundproof foam, and while you may see the sense of using soundproof foam to eliminate your house’s noise issues, you may be delighted to know that it will also provide you with extra insulations against the drafts which creep into your rooms along with the unwanted noise. So using soundproof foam in your house is a great way to eliminate two annoying problems in one relatively easy step!

How To Install Soundproof Foam

Perhaps the biggest selling point of soundproof foam is that its installation will not mean that you need to tear down and replace your existing walls. Soundproof foam will be added to your home through its attic, from where it will make its way down the interior surfaces of the walls, coating them with a new, sound-deadening layer of insulation and giving you the snug and quiet home for which you’ve been yearning.

soundproof panels

By the time the soundproof foam has completely descended along you walls, it will have completely filled any small holes and gaps, including those surrounding your electrical outlets and lighting fixtures. If you’re like most homeowners, you might have never considered how the tiny openings around these outlets and fixtures can reduce you home’s overall energy efficiency, and one of the biggest rewards of using soundproofing foam will come when you see your next energy bill! Another overlooked benefit of installing soundproof foam is that it will absorb any unpleasant odors so that they do not spread throughout your house.

Other Things You’ll Love About Soundproof Foam

In addition to lowering your energy bills, using soundproof foam to stop your noise problems will save you significantly over any other soundproofing methods. For one thing, you’ll have full access to every room of your house while the soundproofing foam installation is taking place, and the labor costs of installing it will be a fraction of those of any other method of soundproofing construction. Your soundproofing foam installation will also be backed by a generous warranty.

But the most impressive aspect of using soundproofing foam is, without a doubt, its outstanding noise-deadening properties. Should your home be near a street which has continuing heavy traffic, you have probably longed for a way to shut out the noise, especially when you are trying to get a good night’s rest. But your soundproof foam will also eliminate the problem of noise bleeding between your home’s interior walls, so that your kids can stay up late watching TV or playing video games without disturbing your sleep or distracting you from your office work.

Soundproof foam will also block sound from penetrating the interior walls of your home. The kids can play their music or video games in one room while you watch TV in another and someone else works in the home office, and all of you will be spared the distraction of each other’s noise!

Soundproofing Your Wall With American Mass Loaded Vinyl

You will have to look long and hard to find a soundproofing material superior to American mass loaded vinyl for soundproofing your wall. American mass loaded vinyl, or MLV, is high quality vinyl sheeting embedded with both silica and barium salts to give it weight. American loaded mass vinyl works as well as lead sheeting when it comes to deadening noise, but is non-toxic.

You will stretch your roll of American loaded mass vinyl across the studs of the wall you are soundproofing, having each section overlap the previous one by at least ". You’ll then either nail or staple the MLV to the studs, and use a good acoustical caulk to seal both its seams and its perimeter. When the MLV has been securely sealed against gaps, you will used PVC seam sealing tape to further protect the seams and perimeter, making your soundproofing membrane will be as tight as possible.

When you’re satisfied that your MLV membrane is as soundproof as you can make it, you can install a layer of 5/8′ fire code-compliant drywall, which you’ll also tape, mud, and paint. This method of soundproofing your wall is the way to go if you are constructing a new home.

Soundproofing Your Wall If You Live In An Apartments Or Condo
What if, however, you live in an apartment or condo and want to try soundproofing a wall which is shared by two units, and the apartment or condo manager will not let you remover the existing drywall to add soundproofing material to the studs? You can still successfully soundproof the wall using a sound-damping material known as Green Glue.

A highly elastic and viscous damping compound, Green Glue is applied to drywall using a large caulking gun, and most home construction experts recommend that you allow at least two twenty-nine ounce tubes of Green Glue for each of your four-by-eight panels of drywall (three would be even better!). You can apply the Green Glue by placing a section of drywall face-down on your sawhorses and using the caulking gun to cover its back with the Green Glue.

When you’ve finished applying the Green Glue, you can simply position the new drywall over the original wall and screw it into place, and repeat the process of applying Green Glue to your drywall sections until you have completely covered both your existing walls and your ceiling.

Either of these ways of soundproof foam your wall will be appropriate for both commercial and in-home recording studios, and also for home music practice rooms or home theaters.
